HC Photo Gallery

For two years we've been meaning to create a photo gallery of some of the bikes we've put together or had for sale in the shop. I finally got around to it. As you can see, there aren't many photos up yet. If you have a bike that we had some hand in creating, and you'd like to get it up on the gallery, feel free to stop by and have your bike photographed.

There is a permanent link over on the left side.

Framebuilding Class

Curt Goodrich has kindly agreed to amaze and astound us all with his skills again. If you want to see how a frame is assembled, there is no one better able to do so. Not only is Curt an artist with a torch but he is absolutely enthusiastic about what he does.

When: Saturday, March 29th; 11 AM

Where: Curt's Shop

Cost: $25

We will ride there as part of our Saturday morning ride. Details to follow.

This class filled up quickly last year and a number of people were left out. Attendance is limited to 12 so if you went last year, please hold off registering so that others can attend for the first time. As we get closer to the date, I will update the blog so that everyone gets a crack at it.

If you are interested, please call or stop by to make payment. Email Kevin with questions.

Cheers

Big Dummy Here!!

We have ordered a 20 inch frame that should be here this week arrived today. If you want one, this is your chance. They are selling out fast.

This frame is not part of our Anniversary Sale.

Price $895. Given its size, shipping will be costly so pickup is preferred.

Alfine is coming!!

Alfine is Shimano's new (for the US anyway) group that is being featured on a lot of the new breed of commuting bikes.

We will be getting the front and rear hubs and shifters only at this point. The Alfine 8 speed hub includes several improvements:

  • Disc brake capability, using Shimano's proprietary Center-lock rotors.

  • Double roller clutch engagement for smoother, quieter shifting

  • Shifting power modulator for smoother shifts

We will also be getting the front dynamo hub which is disc brake compatibility and the Rapid Fire shifters. They are available in both black and silver but we have no idea what we will receive until we get them. They should arrive this week sometime.

Check out our shop site for more info and pricing.

    Sale update

Somehow our old sale page got deleted temporarily misplaced (but seems to have re-appeared). I don't have time right now to do a complete run-down on everything we have at a discounted price, but here are the basics:

At least 10% off EVERYTHING in stock or easily available from our usual distribution channels.
20% off ALL in-stock rims, tires, and wheels that are already built

Many bikes including Rivendell Bleriot (59 and 61 cm), various Breezers, a quirky Salsa Casserroll, and others at a reduced price - inquire for details.

Discounts apply to bikes, frames, parts, accessories, etc. No discounts on labor.

    HC's Second Anniversary Soiree

was a huge success by all accounts. Lots of friends showed up and it was great to see all the people who have made the last two years loads of fun.

Look for more informal "Soirettes" this summer as we utilize our back parking lot for some cook outs and informal swap meets.

Thanks to Eric, John and Pamela for providing the great music.

    Pictures here and here.

    Used bike: Atlantis 58 cm

This is one of the originals, serial #AT0076, with the highly sought after pointy lugs, in the popular 58 cm size. In addition to the low serial number and pointy lugwork, this bike also has some distinctive touches not seen on current Atlantis frames - namely a smaller but thicker brass headbadge and the number "2" on the downtube decal. The frameset is in pristine condition except for evidence of racks having been installed on the dropout eyelets. The part spec is likewise impressive and in generally great condition: XTR M900 hubs, XT derailleurs, supercool Shimano cantilevers, American Classic seatpost with Brooks Flyer saddle, Sugino XD double crank with Stronglight 48/34 rings, Dura-Ace bar-end shifters, Dura Ace headset with the logo polished off, Nitto Technomic Deluxe 11cm stem and 48cm Noodle handlebars (taped, twined, and shellacked), and Blackburn Ti cages. With hammered Honjo fenders to finish it off, this bike is absolutely gorgeous.

I am also happy to announce that Curt Goodrich has agreed to lead another seminar on frame building. It will occur in late March so stay tuned for more details.
    _______________________________________________________________
Our second annual bike repair class series will begin Saturday, 2/23. All classes will run from 8am to 12 noon so the shop will not open until after class. Shop rides will continue uninterrupted, leaving from the shop every Saturday morning at 7:45ish.

Payment is required in advance and you can call it in or stop by. Email Kevin (kevin@hiawathacyclery.com) with any questions or to reserve your spot. These filled up in a matter of days last year so don’t hesitate and sign up now.

Wheel Building. Saturday, March 8, 8 - 12 noon. Learn to lace, tension, true and dish a wheel. Students should come prepared with the supplies necessary to build one wheel. We are offering a 10% discount on all parts purchased through us.

    Twin Cities Bike Swap

We won't be there because we'll be in Portland at the time, but this year's Twin Cities Bike Swap will be held Sunday, Feb 10, 9:30-2:30 at the National Sports Center in Blaine. This is the event that was held at the St Paul Academy in previous years. We have always enjoyed this event and regret that we can't be there this time. If you are available, and looking to break the cabin fever, head up to Blaine to look for deals and see friends.
